What is hybrid solar?

The Best of On-Grid and Off-Grid

A hybrid system stays connected to the grid like an on-grid system, so surplus units are credited through net metering. It also has a battery and a hybrid inverter. When TNPDCL supply fails, the inverter switches your essential circuits to the battery in milliseconds, and the sun recharges it the next morning, even if the grid is still down.

  • Lower bills: net metering credits your daytime surplus against night-time use
  • Backup in power cuts: fans, lights, Wi-Fi, TV and fridge keep running
  • Replaces your old UPS: no more lead-acid top-ups or charging from the grid
  • Smart energy app: see generation, battery level and backup time on your phone

How it works

How a Hybrid System Works

Solar first, battery next, grid last, and backup the moment the power goes.

1.

Panels power
your home first

2.

Surplus charges
the battery

3.

Extra units go to
the grid (net meter)

4.

Power cut? Battery
takes over instantly

5.

Track it all
on your app

Who it's for

Is Hybrid Solar Right for You?

Frequent power cuts

Maintenance shutdowns, summer transformer faults and cyclone outages stop bothering you.

Work from home

Keep Wi-Fi, laptops and lights on through outages, without a noisy generator.

Elderly family & infants

Fans and essential appliances keep running when it matters most.

Replacing an old UPS

Upgrade worn-out lead-acid batteries to a solar-charged lithium system.

Shops & clinics

Billing systems, lights and refrigeration stay on so business doesn't stop.

Future-ready homes

Start with a hybrid-ready inverter today and add more battery later.

Power cuts rare in your area? An on-grid system is the most cost-effective choice, and you can keep your existing UPS for backup. No grid at all? See off-grid solar.
What's included

Everything in a Rainbow Solar Hybrid System

Solar panels

Tier-1, DCR-certified mono PERC or TOPCon panels with a 30-year performance warranty.

Hybrid inverter

Lithium (LFP) battery

Compact, maintenance-free storage with 4,000–6,000 cycles and 80–90% usable capacity.

Safety & backup wiring

Separate backup circuit for essential loads, surge protection, earthing and lightning arrester.

Net meter & approvals

TNPDCL application, net meter and subsidy filing for the eligible solar part, all handled for you.

Cyclone-ready install

Hot-dip galvanised structures for coastal wind loads; battery placed in a shaded, ventilated, flood-safe spot.

Sizing guide

How Much Battery Backup Do You Need?

Size the battery for your essential loads, not the whole house. Your engineer confirms the exact design after the free survey.

Essential loads on backupApprox. loadSolar sizeBattery (lithium)Backup time
4 fans, 6 LED lights, Wi-Fi, TV~400 W3 kW2.5 kWh~5 hours
+ refrigerator~600 – 700 W3 – 5 kW5 kWh~6 hours
+ water pump, laptops~1 kW5 kW5 – 7.5 kWh~4 – 6 hours
+ one 1.5-ton inverter AC~2.2 kW5 – 6 kW10 kWh~4 hours

Indicative only. ACs, geysers and induction cooktops need much more storage, so most homes keep them off the backup circuit. Read our solar + battery guide for Tamil Nadu power cuts for costs and battery choices.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hybrid solar system?
A hybrid solar system is connected to the grid like an on-grid system, but also has a battery and a hybrid inverter. It saves money through net metering and keeps essential loads running during power cuts.
Is a hybrid solar system eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
The subsidy is for grid-connected solar with a net meter. Hybrid systems can be designed so the solar part stays eligible, but batteries are not subsidised. We confirm eligibility for your configuration during the free site survey.
How long will the battery last during a power cut?
It depends on the battery size and what is connected. A 5 kWh lithium battery typically runs fans, lights, Wi-Fi, TV and a fridge (about 600–700 W) for around 6 hours.
Can I convert my existing on-grid system to hybrid?
Yes. Either the on-grid inverter is replaced with a hybrid inverter, or an AC-coupled battery system is added alongside it. Your panels stay as they are.
Will a hybrid system run my AC during a power cut?
It can, but an AC needs a much larger battery and inverter. Most homes keep ACs, geysers and induction cooktops off the backup circuit and back up only essential loads.
