What is on-grid solar?

Solar That Works Hand-in-Hand With the Grid

An on-grid (grid-tied) system connects your rooftop panels to your home and to the electricity grid at the same time. During the day you use solar power first. Any extra units are exported to the grid through a bi-directional net meter, and at night or on cloudy days you draw from the grid as usual. Your bill is calculated on the net units, so it falls sharply.

  • Lowest cost per unit: no batteries, so more of your budget goes into panels
  • Eligible for PM Surya Ghar subsidy: up to ₹78,000 + ₹22,000 for homes, ₹18,000/kW for societies
  • Almost no maintenance: occasional panel cleaning and a yearly check

How it works

How an On-Grid System Saves You Money

Five simple steps from sunlight to a smaller bill.

1.

Sunlight hits
your panels

2.

Grid-tie inverter
converts DC to AC

3.

Your home uses
solar first

4.

Surplus goes to grid
via net meter

5.

You pay only for
net units

Good to know: for safety, on-grid systems switch off automatically during a power cut, so line workers aren't put at risk. If you face frequent outages, consider a hybrid system with battery backup.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an on-grid system work during a power cut?
No. On-grid inverters shut down automatically when the grid fails (anti-islanding protection) so that no power flows back into lines being repaired. Your power returns as soon as the grid does. For backup, choose a hybrid system with a battery.
Is the on-grid system eligible for subsidy?
Yes. Grid-connected rooftop systems for homes qualify for PM Surya Ghar subsidy: ₹30,000/kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW, up to ₹78,000 + ₹22,000. Housing societies get ₹18,000/kW for common facilities.
How does net metering reduce my bill?
The net meter records units you import from and export to the grid. You're billed only for the difference, so daytime surplus offsets night-time use.
What maintenance does it need?
Very little: clean the panels every 2–4 weeks (more often in dusty areas) and get a yearly health check. Our AMC plans cover both.
