Key takeaways

  • Plan about 80–100 sq ft of shadow-free roof per kW, including walkways.
  • A modern 540–550 W panel is about 7.5 ft × 3.7 ft (roughly 28 sq ft).
  • Shade matters more than size: water tanks, parapets and neighbouring buildings decide the usable area.
  • Elevated structures keep your terrace usable underneath.

Before you choose a system size, check whether your roof can hold it. Here's how much space each size needs and how to make the most of a small terrace.

Roof area needed by system size

System sizePanels (≈550 W)Roof area neededUnits per month (Tamil Nadu)
1 kW280 – 100 sq ft~120
2 kW4160 – 200 sq ft~240
3 kW5 – 6250 – 300 sq ft~360
5 kW9 – 10400 – 500 sq ft~600
10 kW18 – 19800 – 1,000 sq ft~1,200

Includes spacing for walkways and cleaning access. Exact layout depends on roof shape and shade.

How big is one solar panel?

Most home installations now use 540–590 W panels measuring about 2.28 m × 1.13 m (7.5 ft × 3.7 ft) and weighing about 27–30 kg. Higher-efficiency TOPCon panels give more watts from the same area. Compare them in Mono PERC vs TOPCon vs bifacial.

Why shade matters more than area

A panel in shade for even part of the day can pull down the output of every panel on the same string. During the survey, our engineer maps shade from water tanks, staircase headrooms, parapets, trees and neighbouring buildings across the year, then places panels only where they get full sun from about 9 am to 4 pm.

Best direction and tilt in Tamil Nadu

Panels should face south at a tilt of about 10–15°. East or west-facing layouts work too, with about 5–10% less generation. Flat RCC roofs make it easy to get the angle right with a mounting structure.

Small terrace? Raised structures (6–8 ft) let you put panels above the water tank area and still use the terrace for drying clothes or functions.

Options for a small or shared roof

  • Elevated structures over usable space or partially over the staircase room.
  • Higher-wattage panels (TOPCon) to fit more kW in the same area.
  • Size to the space: even 2 kW can wipe out the costly top slabs of a Tamil Nadu bill.
  • Apartments can install on the common terrace through the association: see solar for apartments and housing societies.

Is my roof strong enough?

A solar system adds about 15–20 kg per square metre, which a sound RCC roof handles easily. Older roofs with cracks or leaks should be repaired first. Sheet and tiled roofs need special clamps; our engineer checks all of this on the survey.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much roof space is required for a 1 kW solar system?
About 80–100 sq ft of shadow-free roof, including space for walkways.
How much space does a 5 kW solar system need?
About 400–500 sq ft of shadow-free roof for 9–10 panels.
What is the size of a solar panel?
A typical 540–550 W panel is about 2.28 m × 1.13 m (7.5 ft × 3.7 ft) and weighs about 27–30 kg.
Can solar panels be installed on a small terrace?
Yes. Elevated structures, higher-wattage panels and careful layout help. Even a 1–2 kW system can bring a big bill reduction in Tamil Nadu.
